Texmod keeps crashing my Windows Explorer - Guild Wars Forums

Before anyone asks, I'm using texmod to help me with the cartographer title and I'm using Windows Vista Home Edition. For those who don't know what Windows Explorer is, it's a file manager already installed in your Windows computer (obviously).

Anyways, I manage to extracting Texmod into Guild Wars' folder and downloaded the "Complete Collection" edition. But everytime I tried to open Texmod, it takes a very long time to load to the point that after a few minutes, it crashes my Windows Explorer (even the folder that Guild Wars is in reads "not responding"). I tried making McAcfee (my virus scanner) to exclude Texmod while scanning since I think my virus scanner but I still get the same results. Had anyone encountered this problem before? If so, I need help or otherwise I would end having the 2% thing I need to explore even though I explored every single corner of the map.

TexMod is universally hated by all anti-virus programs. I literally had to uninstall mine to get texmod to start up. While you might not want to uninstall McAffe you might be able to add texmod to some type of exception list. Other than that all your problems are caused by the anti-virus.

Isn't it amazing that an anti-virus that is supposed to keep your computer running smooth and give you no problems actually attacks a program you want to use and starts crashing all different elements of your computer?

I also use Vista, and when starting Texmod up I have to generally wait around 5 minutes, the whole folder I have it in lags too like you mentioned. It doesn't crash my explorer though.

I'm trying to find a way to get my stupid Media Center from coming up everytime I turn off GW instead

You really shouldn't use mcafee. They recently introduced a bug where their scanner would flag several non-virus windows system files as viruses and delete them, thus screwing up windows.

Isn't it amazing that some guys will not consider a program dangerous , even if the majority of anti virus engines find it evil?

You do realize that Texmod is considered a virus in the eyes of Anti-Virus software, even though it is not. See how it works, is TM goes in and modifies the initial files and replaces the existing with ones that you want to use. A virus does that same, but to system files, therefore it is seen as a virus by AV programs... this does not mean it is one.

@OP

Basically, you are doing 2 things wrong, 1) Vista 2) McAfee. Both are known to cause problems with numerous programs and which is why they are usually not preferred by gamers especially, Vista may be your only option so I won't really touch on that, but McAfee being "considered" a high AV program, is usually one of the first to have a virus coded to surpass it (ever wonder why the "good" AV programs fail first?). Your best bet is to use something low profile (or at least not a hyped up one), AVG does wonders and is free, never ever had a problem with and works well...

PS: All of this is just personal opinion (dispite a decent amount of knowledge on all of the above), and really you should do as you see fit, hope this helped.

Nevermind, I manage to get both the McAfee On-Demand AND On-Access to exclude TexMod and the program opens smoothly. Then when I try RUN it, the On-Access Scan caught a trojan (yes I know, TexMod is technically a trojan since it involves modding the graphics) and the "D'oh!" message and the didn't run. I knew Doombox say something about temporary disable your antivirus but I'm using McAfee VirusScan console and how should I temporary turn it off then turn it back on when I'm running the mod?

You would have to leave it off whilst running the mod and turn it back on afterwards, otherwise it would catch it whilst working.

My Textmod file is in My Documents. My .tpf files are in My Documents. I run Textmod with Administration Privledges. Have had no problems with my anti-virus software. :P

Try taking Textmod out of your program files and putting it in a seperate folder in my documents. I have a Desktop shortcut for it as well. It loads up instantly for me and has no issues.

Make a folder in your documents or heck, even use the Guild Wars folder in your documents and just create a new folder in there called "Mods" or something. Then just put textmod and all your .tpf files in there. Then just set up Textmod to run with Administration Privledges, and you should be good to go. Hope that helps.

Iircc this is caused by some form of command in the GW shortcut. I'm pretty sure that if you search these forums, you'll find the answer.

Right click your Guild Wars icon on your desktop, and go to properties.

Under target it should say: "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe"

Nothing less, nothing more. I had that issue for the longest time and couldn't figure it out either. Then went there, and changed it to the above, and now it no longer shows up.

I have used AVG for over 2 years now. It is an excellent program. Easy to use, doesn't hog system memory, doesn't nag you into early renewal, etc. The first year or so was free, then I upgraded for about the cost of what I would have paid for Norton's.

I have found that AVG works well with texmod. It will flag it as a trojan during a scan, but it doesn't do anything with it unless you tell it to. I think this is because AVG is smart enough to know that texmod is not attacking system files.

This is true. McAffe literally deleted texmod several times, i thus went into a rage and quickly removed McAffe.
